SMART did a pilot program with the district police department and in consultation with the Superintendent of Police (SP),Mewat. We ran a radio based help line and complaint registering service for the local police. The program was aimed at reaching out to the women and other vulnerable groups in society, who found it difficult to go to the police station or were afraid of harassment, if they registered complaints. The SP announced the numbers of the radio station to the media and to the people of Mewat. The SP announced that any complaint received by Radio Mewat would be treated as a FIR. The complaints started pouring in and SMART would collect all the complaints and deliver them to the police station. Every Monday the SP came to the radio station and addressed the complaints received. Live phone calls were also encouraged and received during the program. The program became extremely popular and was a huge success.
