Globally, there are 82.4 million people who have been forcibly displaced, including refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), and Asylum Seekers, who have fled their homes to escape
violence, conflict, and persecution (UNHCR, Global Trends: Forced Displacement in 2020).
UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works globally to save lives, protect rights and build a better future for refugees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. It ensures that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find refuge from violence or persecution.
In a total of 132 countries, UNHCR staff are working to ensure protection for people forced to flee, strengthen access to education and livelihoods, and provide life saving support like shelter, water, food and healthcare. UNHCR partners with governments, non- profit organizations and private-sector companies to support forcibly displaced people and the communities hosting them.
Community radios represent a crucial input in development processes, playing an important role in democratization, social struggles and awareness raising. Needless to say that there is
a strong link between communication and human Development. Thus, playing an important role in sensitizing the refugee communities.
UNHCR’s primary mandate is to provide international protection and humanitarian assistance, and to seek permanent solutions for refugees, that is, all persons living outside their country of origin for reasons of feared persecution, conflict, generalized violence, or other circumstances that have seriously disturbed public order and who, as a result, require international protection.
Through CR’s, setting up of context for refugees, migrants, their rights, myths and facts & involvement of other stakeholders was achieved by means of excessive research and development followed by the scripts for the community radios.
